Commuting
The community sits just off the US-70B corridor, which runs from Airport Road in the southwest straight into downtown as Albert Pike Road. The US-70/270 bypass south of town carries regional traffic, and AR-7, Central Avenue, is the city’s north-south spine.
Work
Healthcare and hospitality anchor the local economy. CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs and National Park Medical Center are the two big medical employers, and Oaklawn’s racetrack and year-round casino resort keeps tourism running in every season.
The park
Hot Springs National Park wraps around downtown, protecting 47 thermal springs and Bathhouse Row, a National Historic Landmark District of eight bathhouses built between 1892 and 1923. Congress set the land aside in 1832, four decades before Yellowstone.
The lake
Lake Hamilton is the 7,200-acre reservoir on the Ouachita River, held back by Carpenter Dam since 1931. It spans the south side of the city, and AR-7 crosses it on bridges heading into town. The community is named for the lake and sits a few miles north of the water.
Healthcare
Hot Springs has two full-service hospitals: CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs, a 280-bed regional referral center and Level II trauma center, and National Park Medical Center, a 166-bed acute care hospital serving a five-county area.
Schools
Several public school districts serve Garland County, including the Lake Hamilton School District southwest of town. Which schools serve a specific home depends on the exact address, so confirm the assigned district before you move.
